Is Jay Shetty a Real Guru? financial guru exposed

Jay Shetty is a spiritual influencer on social media. In this episode of Authentic or Charlatan, we analyze Jay Shetty’s new course: Live Your Passion, Build an Income where prospective students can learn how to live their purpose, do meaningful work, and earn an income.

Nicole Arbour’s expose video:

I personally dislike these ‘turning your passion into income’ courses that are so prevalent on social media today. Most give students the false hope that running a profitable business is as simple as doing something you’re passionate about.

I’m here to push back because I really dislike the way that these courses and these business opportunities are sold. Using super vague and empty concepts like “pursue your passion” or “find your purpose” cast the widest audience net and are incredibly easy to sell, which is why these gurus do so well. But I feel like they aren’t honest with prospective customers.

The course costs $997 and includes many bonuses, weekly coaching sessions, and Q&A with Jay himself. I’m sure the course delivers what is promised. There’s no doubt that Jay can create a good product. It’s probably a great course for a specific group of people. And some people have probably succeeded from the course.

This Authentic or Charlatan series focuses more on the person selling as opposed to the course so let’s analyze Jay for a minute. He left the corporate world to become a monk for three years. Following his time as a monk, he came back to civilization and became a social media guru. He immediately gained a huge following. He’s really well spoken, articulates his points well, he’s good looking, and makes entertaining skits on YouTube to help educate his viewers on shifting perspectives on common real world experiences.

I have to give a shout out to Nicole Arbor for absolutely destroying Jay in this video. I don’t want to steal any of her excellent research so I’ll leave the link for you in the description. But she essentially found out that Jay was stealing quotes from other people and passing them off as his own. And there’s also an instance of him stealing from a poem for the script of one of his videos without giving credit.

Those of you looking to quit a job to join a passion to profit course, you may find that what you were passionate about is actually a very small percentage of your day-to-day work. Payroll, marketing, selling potential clients, dealing with insurance for your employees, working twice as many hours as you were before, converting your social media into a sales funnel, selling your friends or family, managing inventory, the list goes on.

Hobby’s are fun because there’s no expectations, no selling, and no reliance on an income. Everything changes when that hobby now needs to generate enough money to help support you.

  1. Jay is a Fake guru..guys like these bring bad name to real/genuine people with wisdom, real knowledge about dharma, religion or even self help. He is a marketer disguising himself as self help guru, period.

  2. I’m 50/50 on J.Shetty. The (business?) course price is ridiculous. I like him, but I’m just not sure how much of his info is coming from him, or (scripted?) coming from outside sources (agents, managers, who knows ..etc.) . Youtube (ALL Social Media) is becoming too much of a business and less and less about personal experiences. Thanks for your insight Spencer, well done!

  3. If your passion is to be a psychologist who specializes in developmental, attachment, and relational trauma you will have plenty of work and earn a good living. A society as sick as the USA traumatizes nearly everyone to some degree.

  4. Jay is fake and the western audience is really not ready for real monks. The western perspective requires the monks to be certain way and talk in certain manner which is not true at all times for all monks.

  5. Omg, I love your perspective on quotes. Ppl just eat up these words on a post like gospel. I do too, but of lately don't see how they impact me to change

  6. Jay Shetty changed my life to 100x better. Out of gratitude, I can't say anything negative about him. He means well and wants to change the world to be a better place. He wants everyone to practice kindness, positivity and to get rid of hatred, jealousy & discrimination.

  7. "real mindset or belief change takes years of therapy off of social media, not from your favourate influencers from social media feed"
    Maaaaan, that was OMG!!!!
    billions of hats off sir.

  8. When I was in Malaysia, I saw the very same orange monk outfit he wears sold for $90 at some temple. Whoever thinks that sitting in some monastery or on a mountain for 3 years actually suddenly brings wisdom and true spirituality to a person, is confused. It's a life-long process. The mere fact that he uses the fact that he was there for (only) 3 years to validate himself is an indication that he thinks that it's that simple to get the guru label. Just go hang out on a mountain without a real job and real life responsibilities and then come out and strike gold? Lol as someone who spent 2 decades on daily spiritual growth starting from scientific esoteric methods and not stealing quotes from others ,I'm laughing at this clown. He's a scammer who should really just market himself as a marketer, not a monk. He's a joke. BTW I'm also a marketer. But I don't steal people's quotes nor do I call myself a guru even though my level of spiritual science knowledge (actual science behind it all) is several times greater than his.

  9. I completely agree, I started a business selling books and it's hard because you end up dealing with a lot of riff raff and admirers but not necessarily buyers. I had to go back to getting a job because I couldn't make my sales.

  10. I work a 9-5, 40 hrs a week from home. The owner of my company works probably double that but he has a boat…that he will work from. I get to forget my job at 5:01pm.

  11. Lol successful business owner here. Worked 14-16 hours/day, 7 days/week for 4 years straight before I got to a comfortable position… then 2020 came and wrecked me. Starting back up again… 12-14 hours/day this time around.

That said… I'm sure there are things you can do to make a lot of money without putting in a lot of hours… but you will probably have to pay a lot of people to manage everything for you.

  12. This Jay Shetty man is one of many who preach such cringe "self-betterment" bollocks. It is so much more rampant in India that fewer fall for it than a few decades ago. These people exploit the basic desires that many people have about freedom from work and living rich people's lifestyles.

They would promise the world to you and give you some mumbo jumbo about the mindset controlling your world or whatever. Learn about such things from the people who made it the old fashion way; hard work and a conscientious attitude towards all the aspects of life.

I hate it when these people hypocritically show the life of opulence and leisure while they ask you to figuratively grind your lives until you are good enough. This takes a toll on one's mental well-being. This toxic work culture is the reason why work and study-related suicides are on the rise despite a clear rise in the living standard as measured by the world economic forum.

I am well off and not due to any online guru I found! The word guru has been hijacked by these con artists. Once must fashion their own guru as an ad hoc persona taking the best aspects of people they look up to.

Ask any person who really achieved their perception of freedom and prosperity. You would only find strategy, sacrifices, and a lot of patience.

All the best and have a nice day! 🙂

  13. It has nothing to do with him it has everything to do with you . Your passion not his passion . Probably not many testimonies because some people are full of shit And dont want to put in the work. Why the hell are wordings even credited words are meant for everyone .

  14. Dude your youtube channel is just to talk trash about succesful people (clickbait to make youtube money)…please like you can give better life advice than Dan Lol and Jay Shetty.
