First concertmaster of Staatskapelle Berlin, Jiyoon Lee is rapidly building an international reputation as an emerging young artist, winning praise for her brilliant virtuosity and passionate performances which the BBC Music Magazine called “full-toned, consistent and energetic playing” and the New York Times described as “deeply personal solo with juicy tone”.
Jiyoon Lee first came to international attention in 2013 as she won the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition. She was subsequently a prizewinner of the Indianapolis Violin Competition in 2014 and the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2015. In 2016, she was awarded the first prize at the Carl Nielsen Violin Competition.
Jiyoon Lee is an aspiring soloist, performing with renowned orchestras such as the Philharmonia Orchestra, Orchestre National de Belgique, Orquesta de Valencia, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Odense, Indianapolis, KBS and Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the philharmonic orchestras of Poznan, Seoul and Gyeonggi.
Her debut recording of Korngold & Nielsen Concertos (released May 2018, Orchid Classics) has met much critical acclaim and named Editor’s Choice in Gramophone as well as on BBC Music Magazine. Her recital album titled ‘Mythes’ featuring works by Szymanowski, Bartok, Stravinsky and Ravel on Champs Hill records is to be released in September 2018.
Also a devoted chamber musician, Jiyoon regularly participates in music festivals across the world including Verbier Festival, Tanglewood Music Festival, and Kronberg Festival. Furthermore, she appears in numerous concerts as part of the Boulez Ensemble with artists such as Antonio Pappano, Francois-Xavier Roth, Jörg Widmann and Daniel Barenboim. Born in 1992 in Seoul, her career as a violinist commenced at the age of four. She studied at the Korean National University of Arts and with violinist Kolja Blacher at Hochschule für Musik ‘Hanns Eisler’ in Berlin. Jiyoon Lee plays on a beautiful C. F. Landolfi, kindly on a loan from Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben in Hamburg.

Born into a family of musicians, Ji Yoon Lee studied at the Korea National University of Arts under Nam-Yun Kim before moving to the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where she is currently studying for a master’s under Kolja Blacher. Second laureate of the Pablo Sarasate International Competition in 2011, she won the Moscow International David Oistrakh Competition in 2013. She has taken part in master classes with, among others, Ana Chumachenco, Zakhar Bron, and Pinchas Zukerman, and has participated in the Kronberg Academy in Germany and the Verbier Festival Academy in Switzerland, where she received the Hahnloser Prize. Ji Yoon Lee has performed with a number of orchestras, including the Navarra Symphony Orchestra, the Korean Symphony Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and with ECCO.
