Patuxai Patuxai (Lao: ປະຕູໄຊ, literally meaning Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph, formerly the Anousavary or Anosavari Monument, known by the French as Monument Aux Morts) is a war monument in the centre of Vientiane, Laos, which was built between 1957 and 1968. The Patuxai is dedicated to those who fought in the struggle for independence from France. In romanising the name from the Laotian language, it is variously transliterated as Patuxai, Patuxay, Patousai and Patusai. It is also called Patuxai Arch or the Arc de Triomphe of Vientiane as it resembles the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. However, it is typically Laotian in design, decorated with mythological creatures such as the kinnari (half-female, half-bird).

Haw Phra Kaew Haw Phra Kaew (Lao: ຫໍພະແກ້ວ), also written as Ho Prakeo, Hor Pha Keo and other similar spellings, is a former temple in Vientiane, Laos. The name Xieng Khuan means Spirit City. The park contains over 200 Hindu and Buddhist statues. The socialist government operates Buddha Park as a tourist attraction and public park.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Myanmar?

Two weeks is the perfect amount of time to explore Myanmar. If you have less time, you can still have a great experience but it requires careful planning. At a minimum, five days is enough to give you a taste of the country’s history and culture by visiting two of Myanmar’s “Big Four” destinations.

Myanmar in less than 5 days

Famous U Bein Bridge on the outskirts of Mandalay

The wonderful thing about Myanmar is that even in the big cities you can easily escape the tourist crowds and connect with the culture, traditions, and people. With less than 5 days, it is best to base yourself in Yangon or Mandalay, which have international airports and immerse yourself in the cities and their surroundings.

In addition to Yangon’s famous pagodas and colonial heritage buildings, the city has an amazing arts scene, great culinary experiences and charming rural villages accessible by a short boat trip. Mandalay’s outskirts boast ancient capitals with atmospheric ruins, lush hills for trekking and cycling and a former British hill station located less than 2 hours away, ideal for a day trip or overnight visit.

Bagan, just 3.5 hours from Mandalay’s International Airport, is another option for an overnight trip and well worth the effort if you are interested in architecture and Buddhism.

Myanmar in 5 days

Hot air balloons over the temple-scattered plains of Bagan

Even on a short holiday, you can experience culture and heritage by combining two neighboring destinations accessible by road. If flying into Mandalay, Bagan is the obvious choice as it is just a 4-hour drive between these two former capitals. If your international arrival is into Yangon, then an overland trip to scenic Hpa An or historic Mawlamyine are good options. They are located less than 6 hours from Yangon and their quiet villages and lush landscapes stand in stark contrast to the buzz of Myanmar’s largest city. For those interested in Buddhism, an overnight trip to the Golden Rock, Myanmar’s holiest site, is a great addition to a Yangon tour.

A few trip ideas for 5 days:

Myanmar in 6-8 days

Explore Inle Lake by boat

A week in Myanmar is perfect for a quick but insightful introduction to the country. Rather than trying to cram in the four destinations, it is recommended to focus on two or three regions. If you are interested in history, Mandalay should be at the top of your list. Bagan is ideal for those curious about Myanmar’s spiritual side and incredible architecture. Nature lovers should head to the Inle Lake region, where endless trekking routes and bike trails can be found as well as a diverse mix of ethnic groups. Staying two nights in three different destinations or 3-4 nights in two areas will result in a relaxing yet immersive holiday.

A few trip ideas for 6-8 days:

Myanmar in 9-12 days

Pindaya Caves

Nine days is (just barely!) enough to take in all of the ‘Big Four’ sites. It will be a fast trip but you will at least get a full day of exploring in each destination. With a few more days, you can slow down the pace in these key destinations or add in an overland trip to a lesser-known site such as Pindaya, Pyin Oo Lwin or Mt Popa.

A few trip ideas for 9-12 days:

Myanmar in 13 days or more

Sadan Sin Min Cave in Hpa-An

Lucky you! Two weeks is the perfect time to enjoy a mix of sites and experiences without rushing. Linger in the big four and take some overland journey or a full-day cruise between Mandalay and Bagan. Or add an extension to scenic Hpa An and Mawlamyine in the south, the northern Shan hills for trekking adventures near Pyin Oo Lwin and Kyauk Me, fly to the ancient ruins of Mrauk U or wrap up your trip with a beach break. Whatever your interest, Myanmar has just what you are looking for.

How many days do you need to visit Laos? – Explorers Against Extinction

Laos is a country with rich and beautiful biodiversity and is naturally a hotspot for eco-tourists and nature lovers alike. It is home to over 800 bird species and 100 types of mammal and there’s plenty to see when you arrive.

Of course, Laos is a great place to visit and support the following conservation efforts:

Rescue elephant sanctuaries

Wildlife sanctuaries

Sustainable agriculture

Veterinary work

Community project work

However, knowing how many days to spend in the country is essential for planning your trip. Not least as you will also require a visa for Laos from the UK which you must obtain before you go. This will give you around 30 days to spend in the country.

Are 30 days in Laos enough for your trip? Find out below where we examine how many days you’ll need to get the most out of a visit to this extraordinary Southeast Asian nation.

How long should I allow for a short trip to Laos?

If you’re just travelling to Laos to visit a specific sight you will only need a few days. Around 5 -10 days should be enough if you have a focused plan.

This will give you enough time to really see the sights you’ve chosen to prioritise on your trip, with enough flexibility to manage the sometimes leisurely transport options available once you arrive.

The most important thing is to allow enough time to ensure the trip doesn’t feel like a hurried rush. Give yourself at least an extra day or two just to really savour your experience and allow room for slower travel times.

Suggested activities for shorter trips:

Luang Prabang

Explore Vientiane

Trip to Vang Vieng

Tour of Pakse

How many days should I spend in Laos for a holiday or vacation?

You will need around 1 – 2 weeks to spend time getting to know Laos better as a foreign traveller. This gives you plenty of time to explore a few cities and cultural sites at your leisure.

Plus, you’ll have much more of a chance to get from the top to the bottom of the country. You’ll also have more time to try out many of the exciting and eco-friendly activities that are available in the country.

Suggested activities for medium-length trips:

Take a slow boat down the Mekong river

Luang Prabang

Travel to Pakse by boat

Spend some time in Vang Vieng

How many days to spend in Laos if you want to volunteer?

It’s better to stay for the full 30 days permitted by your visa if you want to volunteer in Laos. This will give you the maximum flexibility possible to support one of the eco-tourism or conservation projects in the country and experience the land as a tourist too.

It’s relatively easy to find country tours and volunteering opportunities that last around 2 to 3 weeks or less. This will leave plenty of time to visit many of the country’s main attractions as well in the remaining 7-14 days left over.

The amount of time you need will ultimately depend on the project that you end up registering for. Yet, the 30 days you are allowed to spend in the country is more than enough to lend your support to one of the many worthy causes found in the country.

Suggested volunteering options in Laos:

Teaching English as a second language

Community projects

Sustainable farming and development

Animal welfare

Whether you decide to teach English to schoolchildren, assist in sustainable development projects or support a wildlife sanctuary there are plenty of options to choose from. Numerous organizations offer eco-friendly choices that allow tourists to help out with the natural environment in the country.

Laos is a great country to explore as a tourist or as a volunteer. Having a clear plan is the best way to make the most of the time that you are permitted to spend in the nation and to truly experience the majesty of its culture, landscape and natural environment.
