Disappointing ‘Seoul Searching’ isn’t what audiences are looking for
The Sundance press guide paints “Seoul Searching” as a loving tribute to ’80s pop culture and the films of John Hughes, and that affection is obvious. But the final product is far too flawed to do its inspiration justice.
It’s a painful misfire that wants to be the Korean “Breakfast Club,” but director Benson Lee’s tribute feels less like Australian Pink Floyd and more like a group of 16-year-olds jamming in a garage down the block.
“Seoul Searching” is built around a real-life concept. Back in the 1980s, Korean parents raising their children away from the homeland became concerned that the kids lacked the proper value of their native culture. So kids raised in the U.S., Germany, etc., were sent back to South Korea to participate in culture-intensive summer camps.
Being kids and being the ’80s, things didn’t always go as planned. Supposedly, “Seoul Searching” is the story of (or is at least inspired by) one of these summer catastrophes.
It’s a nice idea, but in spite of a few decent jokes and a killer soundtrack featuring The Clash and other ’80s rock icons, the sum total falls well short of its high hopes.
The cast is intended to be a diverse group of zany misfits but comes off like a bunch of two-dimensional stereotypes. Sid (Justin Chon) is the spiky-haired punk who idolizes The Sex Pistols. Grace (Jessika Van) is the rebellious preacher’s daughter who dresses like “Like A Virgin”-era Madonna. Three boys in jumpsuits and gold chains dress and speak like Run-DMC. There’s also the military kid, the tomboy and Sergio (Esteban Ahn), a Korean boy raised in Mexico who behaves like a sad south-of-the-border caricature.
The irony is that the ’80s were rife with this kind of stereotyping. But “Seoul Searching” wants to imitate it instead of laugh at it, and in 2015 it just feels out of place, if not offensive.
Throw in some awkward writing and mediocre acting, and you get a film that sent several dozen patrons to the exits a half-hour into its Sundance press and industry screening.
If you make it past the first act, “Seoul Searching” gets better, sort of.
The second half of the film tries to dig into the backgrounds of half a dozen of the kids (as well as one of the teachers) in a futile attempt to add some gravitas to the effort. But the dramatic tone switch feels very insincere, and each of the clunky resolutions results in another fade-to-black false ending that makes the film drag even more.
Finally, just when you think things are nearing the obligatory heartfelt finish line, “Seoul Searching” gives us an “Animal House”-style brawl between the Korean kids and another group of summer school kids from Japan. This of course leads to another ham-fisted message, and another dramatic fade to black.
Not all of John Hughes’ films were PG, family-friendly comedies, but the excessive R-rated profanity in “Seoul Searching” feels like it’s being done for show rather than for character authenticity. In better hands, “Seoul Searching” might have been a nice balance of ’80s nostalgia and sincere coming of age. Unfortunately, what we have here is a missed opportunity.

With Parasite‘s historic Best Picture win at the 2020 Oscars, South Korea has now become an intractable contender in the argument for which countries are producing the best movies today. Parasite is a great introduction to the South Korean aesthetic, as director Bong Joon-ho has been playing with tone since the early 2000s. His spectacular crime thrillers Mother and Memories of Murder and his acclaimed monster movie The Host helped establish him as one of the country’s most promising filmmakers. Parasite‘s Song Kang-ho, one of Korea’s most versatile and prolific leading men, also starred in the latter two films and serves as the connective tissue between Bong and many of his celebrated colleagues. He’s worked with Oldboy director Park Chan-wook (Thirst, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance), Kim Jee-woon (The Age of Shadows, The Good, the Bad, the Weird), and Poetry and Burning director Lee Chang-dong multiple times.

You may be surprised to find out that the movie ratings given to current movies were originally designed by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) back in 1968. The current rating system we use was created in response to a previous self-censorship system that was created in 1922, known as the Hays Code, when the MPAA was founded and led by William Hays. The Hays Code was developed to ensure the absence of “offensive material” and prevent government interference in filmmaking.
The current rating system we have in the United States is voluntary and requires a fee for having material go through the rating process. The rating process is handled by the Classifications and Ratings Administration (CARA) by a rating board that is made up of a group of independent parents that is charged with giving ratings to films that “give parents clear, concise information about a films content, in order to help them determine whether a movie is suitable for their children,” according to a CARA brochure
During the rating process, the rating board considers things like language, sex, violence, drug use and other situations that might concern most parents. The ratings board tries to reflect what they think the majority of other parents would give the film in ratings.
Ratings are not designed to indicate that films are appropriate or inappropriate, they are simply a way of saying what kind of content is included in the movie to give parents a chance to make informed decisions on what they are allowing their children to watch. When you are looking at ratings, look at the three parts included in a rating.
The rating letter (G, PG, PG-13, R or NC-17)—this indicates the level of content.
The rating definition—this is generally included in the lower box of the rating itself and gives a more detailed explanation of what that rating means. Some statements may include, “Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13” or “Some Material May Not Be Suitable for Children.”
The rating descriptors—these are usually put to the right of the rating letter. This is always unique to each film, but gives more details about why the film received a certain rating. Some statements may include “Extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images” or “For sequences of strong violence, language throughout, and some sexuality/nudity” or “Mild language and some crude humor.”

G: General Audiences, All Ages Admitted. Contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that the in-view of the Rating Board would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture. PG: Parental Guidance Suggested, Some Material May Not Be Suitable for Children. The film should be investigated further by parents. There may be some content such as language, violence or brief nudity, but they aren’t so intense that more than guidance is suggested. Remember, the content will vary with each movie, so check the specific movie rating for the film you are researching.
PG-13: Parents Strongly Cautioned, Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13. This rating is a stronger caution for parents that content included may not be appropriate for children under 13 (pre-teen ages). This may include stronger language, extended violence or sexual situations and drug-use. Remember, the content will vary with each movie, so check the specific movie rating for the film you are researching.
R: Restricted, Children Under 17 Require Accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian. This rating means the film contains adult material such as adult activity, harsh language, intense graphic violence, drug abuse and nudity. Most theaters have their own policies regarding R rated movies and some include checking IDs of those who look under 17 purchasing tickets, allowing only parents to purchase tickets and accompany those under 17 into the movie, or just stating it has to be an adult guardian (not necessarily a parent) and that guardian has to purchase the tickets and accompany under 17 ages the entire time. Check with your theater on the policies and other parents about what you will allow your children to watch.
NC-17: No One 17 and Under Admitted. These films are too adult for children. The rating doesn’t mean that they are obscene or pornographic, but that the content is only appropriate for adult audiences.
