What happened to Slotline putters?

By the late 1980s, Slotine was a giant in the putter business, but the company later fell on hard times. In 2007, however, Slotline Golf was acquired by Dynamic Brands, which also owns Bag Boy and AMF Golf. Dynamic Brands quickly set the rebirth of Slotline into motion.

Are Slotline putters good?

Slotline is one of the golf industry’s all-time best selling putter brands and the industry pioneer for multi-metals and heel-toe weighting in putters.

Who is Slotline golf?

Reinvigorated in Australia, Slotline Golf is a global golf powerhouse, providing golfers of all ages and skill levels with high-tech drivers, putters, wedges, and much more. Slotline is driven by high performance and world-class results.

Insider Interview: Slotline Putters

After seven years of dormancy, Slotline Golf is back in a big way with more than a dozen new putters introduced in recent months. So far, so good: The Slotline 385 blade recently earned top honors in PutterZone.com’s 2009 Power Picks for the Best Buy category.

Slotline was founded by Duke Duclos, an aerospace engineer whose “Inertial” putters popularized the concept of “ moment of inertia ,” or MOI. Duclos was also an early adopter of multi-material putter construction, and his signature “slot and line” alignment system has spawned several imitators.

Chad Lehr, Slotline’s product manager, wields 20 years of experience in the golf industry. He started in golf retail after college and later worked in research and development for the Ben Hogan Company (where he worked with the future owners of Bag Boy). In 1996, he moved to Carlsbad—ground zero for the California golf industry—where he spent 10 years as a sales representative for Royal Precision, providing shafts to all of the top golf club companies. When his old friends acquired Slotline, they recruited him to take charge of updating some of the original Slotline models while creating new designs as well. PutterZone.com recently spoke with Chad to get the latest scoop on Slotline. Following is our exclusive interview:

Can you tell us about the rebirth of Slotline Golf—how did it come about?

The owners were looking for opportunities to acquire a strong brand with a technology story and Slotline came across their desk in late 2007. As you know, Slotline was the number two putter company in the late 1980s and had quite a following. In a rather short period of time, Slotline sold over one million Inertial putters and introduced MOI to the golfing public. Now, some 30 years later, MOI is the buzzword in the industry and people have a good understanding of its advantages in golf clubs. It was a wonderful opportunity to take a brand that at one point was a household name, dust it off and bring it back with updated original Inertial putters and also some new designs.

What are the advantages of Slotline putters for the average golfer?

The advantage of a Slotline putter for the average golfer is very similar to that of using a 460cc driver. Since most golfers miss the sweet spot of the putter on a regular basis, a high MOI Slotline putter will give them a better chance of making the putt or leaving their miss within tap-in range. When you miss the sweet spot with your driver now, you’re misses aren’t nearly as bad as they were a few years ago when we were playing with 320cc Ti drivers. And if you can improve your misses, you’ll improve your score.

You relaunched Slotline with three families of putters—the 300, 500 and 700 series. What distinguishes each series?

The differences between the three families of putters are materials and processes. The 300 Series putters are cast from 431 stainless-steel and each putter has 30 grams of tungsten located in the sole. The 500 Series is one-piece forged 6061 aircraft grade aluminum that spends 90 minutes on a CNC machine before it reaches final shape, and anywhere between 132 grams and 206 grams of our proprietary Tungsten blend is used to bring the head to final weight. The 700 Series starts as a solid 2.4 pound block of 6061 aircraft grade Aluminum and spends 2.5 hours on the CNC machine before reaching final shape. Then anywhere between 62 grams and 166 grams of Tungsten is inserted into the head to bring it to final weight. Also, the MOI readings differentiate the three series: the 500 Series has higher readings than the 300 Series and the 700 Series readings are higher than the 300 and 500.

Word is that there’s been a good response from the tours, the Champions Tour in particular. How do you go about introducing your putters to the world’s top players?

Our reps will be on the Champions Tour every week representing Slotline. Getting a putter in play is a process. We have a couple of Slotline staff bags filled with putters on the practice green every week and our reps are there to answer questions and work with the players. And hopefully when a player takes a putter, he puts it in play. As you know there are a lot of great products out there and everyone is after the same thing, so even though we may give a putter to a player, there isn’t a guarantee it will go in the bag for that week’s tournament. It may resurface a few weeks down the road, if not right away. We do have one advantage over other start-up putter companies, though, and that is the brand, Slotline. A lot of the players on the Champions Tour are very familiar with Slotline and many of them used a Slotline putter on Tour at some point. So we are confident that as the season goes along, we will be successful in getting our putters in the bags of some of the best players in the world.

You are working on three prototype putters that you hope to unveil on tour soon. Can you tell us about these putters, and will they eventually make it to retail?

There isn’t much I can tell you about the new putters other than they are multi-material construction—stainless steel, Aluminum and tungsten—and spend a lot of time on a CNC milling machine. I have had the opportunity to present the first prototypes to a retired former winner on the PGA Tour and a current major winner on the Champions Tour. Both gentlemen liked the look, loved the feel and raved about how the ball came off the face. It was hard to get the putter back when we were done. At some point they’ll make it to retail, but I have quite a bit of work and testing to do before that happens.

Demand Brings Putter Series Back into Play at PGA Show

RICHMOND, Va. (February 18, 2009) – After a year in product development, attendees at the 2009 PGA Merchandising show in Orlando got their first taste of a much anticipated Inertial putter series from Slotline. In addition to the resurrected Inertial designs, the company introduced 14 putters among three distinct series. The product line’s debut was met with a mix of nostalgia and excitement. The original Inertial putter sold more than one million units and was once second in putter sales in the ’80s.

“I can’t tell you how many golfers came up to me at the show and told me how much they loved their original Slotline Inertial, and how happy they are to see us back on the market,” said Chad Lehr, Slotline’s product manager. Not only does Slotline bring back fond memories among PGA professionals and the everyday golfer, but pros on the Champions Tour this past fall have had a similar reaction. “The senior tour pros have been impressed with the variety of models as well as the performance and feel of the putters,” said manufacturer’s tour representative, Mike Nickell.

The original Inertial putter has been off the market for over seven years. In 2007, Slotline was purchased by Dynamic Brands, the parent company for the Bag Boy® Company, the Baby Jogger™ Company, and AMF® Golf. Slotline was created by weekend golfer and former McDonnell Douglas engineer, Clovis “Duke” Duclos in the 1970s. Frustrated with his putting, Duke created a putter with an alignment aid that utilized a SLOT (located on the back edge of the top-line) and LINE (located directly beneath the SLOT). If the LINE is visible in the SLOT, then you are correctly positioned over the ball. Thus, the name Slotline came to be.

However, much of Slotline’s fame came from the fact that it brought awareness to golfers about the benefits of moment of inertia technology or MOI. Duke was intrigued by the heel and toe weighting in Karsten Solheim’s PING® Anser. As an engineer, Duke understood that heel and toe weighting in putter design gives the putter a high moment of inertia (MOI) or resistance to twisting on off center hits. However, these benefits were not being promoted to the golfer.

Seeing an opportunity to educate the consumer on the benefits of MOI technology in putter design, Duke used his knowledge of physics to create a putter with the highest MOI on the market. He achieved this by using aluminum to make the lightest body possible and lead to make the toe and heel as heavy as possible. The result was the High Moment, Inertial putter, and he educated the consumer on the benefits of a high MOI putter through his advertisements and slogans like, “Putt up to 2.5 times better.”

Slotline’s new 500 Series. The SL-500 Series incorporates the original Inertial putter design with updated materials and technology such as forged 6061 aircraft grade aluminum, Tungsten weighting for exceptionally high MOI, tri-milled face, and the signature SLOT and LINE alignment aid. The SL-500 Series includes: SL-581F Hi-Moment Offset, SL-582F Hi-Moment Non-Offset, SL-583F New Moment, and the SL-584F Center Stroke Mallet. (All SL-500 Series putters MSRP for $159.95.)

Upon seeing the new 2009 Slotline putters, Duke himself had this to say: “I so appreciate the bonding of the principles of a high MOI to these beautiful new models. I know from experience the design discipline required, and it has been done in spades. These new models deliver the best feel and performance possible.”

GolfTheUnitedStates.com [Slotline Putters Searching the past for the answers of today]

By Jeffrey A. Rendall, Images courtesy of Slotline

RICHMOND, VA – Looking at today’s golf equipment, there’s little doubt that things are much different than they were twenty or thirty years ago. Today’s oversized irons, big-head titanium drivers and funky putter styles certainly bear little resemblance to their forbears in golf museums around the globe.

It almost makes you forget that golf equipment’s got a history, just like everything else.

And then every once in a while you’ll see a product that not only reminds you of the old days, it’s actually got a tangible connection to the past. Such is the case for Slotline Putters – yes, the same ones you knew all those years ago, though with contemporary technology and materials that’s moved with the times.

Slotline SL-700 family of putters.

And here you thought the ‘Back to the Future’ concept was just in the movies.

It’s hard to overstate Slotline’s impact in the eighties, with just about everyone having owned one in one form or another. Like all good stories, there’s a human element to the Slotline tale, beginning with the company’s original founder, Clovis ‘Duke’ Duclos (pronounced doo-cloh). In the early 1970’s, Duclos wasn’t happy with his putting, so he decided to use his background as an aerospace engineer to ‘build’ something better.

From Duclos’ early tinkering emerged the first Slotline putter – a putter that included a slot (on the back edge of the top-line) and line (located directly beneath the slot). When lining up for a putt, if the line is completely visible in the slot, Duclos reasoned, your eyes are where they should be over the ball.

And if you’re lined up right, you’ve got a better chance to put the ball in the hole – isn’t that what a putter’s supposed to do?

The Slotline Raider SL-784 back view.

Duclos’ friends apparently were impressed with his new invention, as he received a number of requests to make more putters – and the Slotline Golf Company was born in 1972. The company grew rapidly from there, even convincing Duclos to leave his job at McDonnell Douglas to concentrate on designing golf equipment (irons, woods and more putters), which he did in 1975.

Moving forward a bit, Duclos became fascinated with the heel-toe weighting of Karsten Solheim’s Ping Anser putter – and began incorporating the concept into his own designs, with a bit of a different twist. Using his physics and aerospace materials background, Duclos conceived of a putter with two different metals – lightweight aluminum in the center and encapsulated lead in the heel and toe sections, which produced a moment of inertia (MOI) 2.5 times higher than a blade putter, and 1.8 times higher than his inspiration, the Ping Anser.

The Slotline putters’ unique weighting reduced twisting upon impact – in layman’s terms, it means the ball will roll straighter.

Slotline’s innovative products took off in the 80’s, having grown as a company from just Duclos in the beginning to 175 employees – and eventually offering over fifty different models of putters, irons and woods, and reaching sales of $13 million (which placed it second only to Ping) one year. The company also enjoyed success on the professional circuits, including a win at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Slotline SL-500 family of putters.

Moving forward once again, Dynamic Brands (the parent company for The Bag Boy, the Baby Jogger and AMF Golf) acquired Slotline Golf in 2007 – and now, Slotline is back in golf shops to golfers’ delight.

Chad Lehr, Slotline’s Production Manager, says they’re merely building on the Slotline brand that everyone’s already so familiar with. “Since we’ve ‘come back,’ the Slotline name has been well received in the marketplace and media due to name recognition and the brand’s legacy. Because there were over one million Original Inertial putters sold in the late 80’s, we brought back some of the original designs for re-introduction so people could fall in love all over again.”

Lehr continues, “Duke set the standard pretty high with his original designs, and it was our intent to stay true to his vision. The (current) 500 Series putters have been updated with better materials and manufacturing processes, the direct result being a product with a higher MOI than even the original. We also carried the colors, logos and badging forward due to the brand’s familiarity.”

The company is currently focusing on putters, as it no longer offers irons or woods.

The Slotline Raider SL-784 sole view.

Lehr’s putter design philosophy is simple: to provide the consumer with a product that will improve their putting (scores) and includes value for the dollar while staying true to the original vision of Duke Duclos.

“When you compare the features and benefits of all Slotline putters with the competition, you realize the value,” Lehr lectured. “A good example is the 300 Series, which sells for $99.95 and contains 30 grams of Tungsten in the sole to stabilize the head — which gives it a larger sweet-spot. Slotline putters have some of the highest, if not the highest, MOI numbers in the industry at their respective price points.”

As far as what separates Slotline from its competitors, Lehr points to the technology (multi-metal design, tri-milled face, Tungsten weighting, materials and manufacturing processes) that’s available at each price point. Proof of the quality is the fact Slotline putters have been put into play on the Champions Tour without any endorsement money as incentives.

And when professionals play a product for free, you know it’s something they think will help them earn dollars in other ways – by winning.

The Slotline Raider SL-784 top view.

For the rest of us non-professionals, we can also take advantage of Slotline’s products, which can essentially be broken down into three series. The 300 Series line offers a cast 431 stainless steel head, Tungsten weighting, tri-milled face, Slot and Line alignment, and a secondary alignment line – all for under a hundred bucks.

The 500 Series putters includes multi-metal design, forged 6061 Aluminum heads which are milled for an average of ninety minutes before reaching final shape, proprietary Tungsten heel/toe weighting to bring the head to final weight and increased MOI, tri-milled face, and of course, the Slot & Line alignment system.

The 700 Series line offers multi-metal design, 100% CNC milled 6061 Aluminum heads which start out as a 2.4 pound block of solid Aluminum and spend 2 ½ hours on a milling machine before reaching their final shape. They’ve also got multiple weighting systems incorporating Tungsten to bring the head to final weight and increase the MOI, and a tri-milled face – again, with the Slot & Line alignment system that’s made Slotline famous.

The 700 Series also has the highest MOI ratings.

Slotline SL-300 family of putters.

We tried the SL-784 Raider model from the 700 Series, which we found closest to what we’d remembered from the traditional Slotline putters from yesteryear. The head feels fairly heavy and stable, and the black and gold colors give it a polished, sleek look.

On the greens, the putter lived up to its billing. Like any putter, it took a period of adjustment to get used to the weight, but the slot and line system was extremely helpful for lining up putts – especially short ones. Putting is all feel – and like any other product, we’d recommend that you try the Slotline putters along with the competition, to see where your ‘feel’ fits in.

Lehr says it’s all about having more fun: “We’d want the Slotline brand to be known for a great performing product that allows you to make more putts and lower your scores – which will make golf more fun.”

It’s hard to argue with that – and sometimes you can even look to the past for the golf solutions you’re searching for today.
