Personal "air conditioners" aren't what they seem technology connections

You know, it’s one thing when a product has a limited scope and application. It’s another when it’s passed off as something greater than what it is. Learn why these fad devices are fad devices in this video.

Here’s some of the stuff I referenced;

First, the channel HVACR Videos. This really is a fascinating channel if you’re curious about what goes into commercial refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and is a great resource for anyone looking to go into that trade;

The video I specifically referenced with the swamp cooler was actually two; in the second video, the swamp cooler is rebuilt.

Second, my old plugs;

  1. Bad marketing, if they didn't call these devices air conditioners I would have given them a look much sooner. Colorado is a perfect place for swamp coolers, but they can't quite do the entire house. I ignored these because of knowing how "air conditioning" works and the impossibility; if they instead called these swamp/evaporative coolers, I would have bought one months ago!

  2. I was given two of these. My city had a few weeks of dry 38°C (100.4 F), and I used one at my home office desk and it did give some relief. But yeah it does not live up to the hype.

  3. Instead of using canned dusters, why don't we use something like rotary compressors or something like that to dust our electronics. It would mean instant compressed air without a tank & the potential to be made of cheap plastic parts & no greenhouse gas emission (from the unit itself)

  4. Watching from South Australia – summers usually are VERY DRY and they work great here. But not in many other parts of the country.
    For some idea on effectiveness at the right places, I have a large evap cooler that is able to get the indoor air temperature more than 20c lower than outside, while ingesting nothing but outdoor air! (45c outside -> 23c inside)

  5. Where I live, these are called desert coolers.
    Never heard anyone call them swamp coolers before.
    We call them that because use them to cool and humidify outside sitting areas and gardens In the desert.
    Ofc we are not using units so small, the one in my house for example is around 1.6×1.6×1 meters so it is much larger.

  6. For those who are DIY'rs the R-152 is a very good replacement for R-12. Same oil and just charge until the air is cold out the vents. No other changes need to be made. It can be put in top of R-12. No flushing necessary.

  7. I bought one a couple of years ago and it just gathered dust the whole time since it never did as expected of it. But then this summer hell came and i was happy i had any sort of device blowing air on me. Never used it with water though.

  8. Were these things invented by a 14 year old genius or by a nun from Leeds as the various ads claim?

    I bet they're an ideal way to get Legionnaires' disease.

  9. There is one major problem with this video: It's presented for an audience who already wouldn't fall for these kinds of fly-by-night junk products. It just provides more information as to why these products are junk. A simple experiment showing how the product isn't effective would be far more effective.

  10. I rigged a Piezo-electric module up so that a small fan blew over the cold side, and insulated the hot side, ran it off a 12v charger. Fun, cool but …

  11. I want people to know I got two ads, one below the video for a swamp cooler, and one before the video for a different product, yet disturbingly similar to what was said at the beginning of the video.

  12. You could surround a thermal mass (water) with insulation(drink cooler) and stick some Peltier plates on some thermal fins and make a cooling device without an outside connection, you would have to drain and fill the water at some point but it would be portable.
